Definition of Term

fathom
(English) The unit of depth in the ocean for countries using the Imperial system of units. One fathom is equal to 6 feet or 1.83 meters. Also sometimes used in expressing horizontal distances, in which case 120 fathoms make one cable or very nearly one-tenth of a nautical mile (about 180 m). (See also: depth, nautical mile)

(French) L'unité de profondeur dans l'océan pour les pays qui utilisent le système Impérial des unités. Une brasse est égale à 6 pieds ou 1.83 mètres. fatoms
(Portuguese) Unidade de medida de profundidade nos países que usam o sistema Imperial de medida. Um fatom é igual a 6 pés ou a 1.83 m. Quando é utilizada para medir na horizontal corresponde a cerca de 1/10 duma milha náutica. (See also: depth, nautical mile)
