Cyprinidae Barbodes bantolanensis (Day, 1914) Fr endemic   12.40 cm SL male/unsexed  Described from specimens collected only from the type locality, Lake Manguao, near Taytay in nothern Palawan (Ref. 2933). Specimens collected in the 1989 survey from the lake (46 individuals) and from Manguao stream (3), about 2 km NW of the lake were not spearated into the two species (bantolanensis and manguaoensis)(Ref. 13489). Study conducted in 2003 showed that P. manguaoensis occupies the littoral zone while P. bantolanensis occupies the open water zone (Ref. 50862).

The most highly prized cyprinid, used for food by the Maranaos. Caught only during the colder months and apparently the rarest and most difficult to catch (Ref. 2855). Still caught in the lake in 1963-64 (Ref. 10885). In the 1990-91 survey, only two (2) kilograms of this species was recorded; caught with gill nets along with the other species (Ref. 13448). No specimen was caught during the 2008 survey (Ref. 95183). Usually found in the littoral areas, with heavy aquatic vegetation (Ref. 13448). Also Ref. 13446, 70969, 94476.

Collected by Herre from Lake Buluan and in a creek at Kidapauan, Cotabato; Balangkott Creek, near Linabo, Malupali R. at Mailag, Tagualmay creek, Bukidnon; Titunod R. near Kolambugan, Lanao; and Busay R. and Balactasan R., Basilan (Ref. 280). Also from Cagayan R. at Cagayan de Misamis; Talacogon, Agusan R.; and Malum R., Tawitawi. Synonyms Barbodes ivis and B. quinquemaculatus, were described from specimens caught from Balabac, Malampaya Sound and Paracan, Palawan: Concepcion and Langbuan, Busuanga, and from Zamboanga, respectively. It is uncertain that this species is native or introduced in Lake Lanao. Please refer to Herre 1933 (Ref. 116482) and Kornfield and Carpenter 1984 (Ref. 5950) for explanation of its distribution in the Philippines and status in Lake Lanao.

Described from the type specimen, 23.5 cm TL, and three other cotypes (11.6 - 13.7 cm) taken from Dansalan, Lake Lanao in 1921. Specimens collected by J. Clemens in 1907 were also examined (Ref. 2929, 81520). No specimen was caught during the 1994 expedition (Ref. 10888) and 2008 survey (Ref. 95183). Also Ref. 13446, 70969, 94476.

Cyprinidae Barbodes hemictenus Jordan & Richardson, 1908 Fr endemic  Pait (Tagalog)  10.00 cm TL male/unsexed  Specimens, 2.5 - 10 cm, were collected in Sabaan River, near Lake Naujan, Mindoro (Ref. 13446); also from Mamboc River, a tributary of Lake Naujan and from its type locality, the Baco River on the north east coast of Mindoro (Ref. 2929). Also reported from streams flowing into Mangarin Bay, Mindoro (Ref. 280). Reported from Taal Lake (Ref. 13446, 80679). It is either a valid species or a geographical race of P. binotatus (Ref. 2091).  No picture yet.

Cyprinidae Barbodes lindog Herre, 1924 Fr, Fi, Thr endemic  Lindog (Maranao/Samal/Tao Sug)  13.20 cm TL male/unsexed  Considered as the most important fish of Lake Lanao and next to P. baoulan, is the most-prized cyprinid. Described specimens were collected from the type locality, Dansalan, Lake Lanao, Mindanao (1921). Once caught in enormous quantities using fine-meshed gill nets among pond weeds of shallow bays of the lake (Ref. 2929). Still caught in the lake from 1963 to 1964 (Ref. 10885). Still present in a 1982 survey (Ref. 12758), 1973-77, 1982-83, 1990-91 and 2008 surveys (Ref. 95183). No specimen was caught during the 1994 expedition (Ref. 10888). Also Refs. 3881, 13446, 70969, 94476. 
Cyprinidae Barbodes manalak Herre, 1924 Fr, Fi, Thr endemic  Manalak (Maranao/Samal/Tao Sug)  31.50 cm TL male/unsexed  Described from specimens, 18.2 - 24 cm, collected from the type locality Dansalan, Lake Lanao, Mindanao (1907, 1921). The longest and bulkiest carp of the lake, but not especially prized for food. Caught with gill nets (Ref. 2929). Still caught in the lake from 1963 to 1964 (Ref. 10885). No specimen was caught during the 1994 expedition (Ref. 10888) and 1975-76, 1982-83, 1990-91 and 2008 surveys (Ref. 95183). Also Ref. 280, 3881, 13446, 70969, 94476.

Specimens collected in the 1989 survey from the lake (46 individuals) and from Manguao stream (3), about 2 km NW of the lake were not spearated into the two species (bantolanensis and manguaoensis) (Ref. 13489). Study conducted in 2003 showed that P. manguaoensis occupies the littoral zone while P. bantolanensis occupies the open water zone (Ref. 50862).

Cyprinidae Barbodes sirang Herre, 1932 Fr, Fi endemic  Sirang (Maranao/Samal/Tao Sug), Tumaginting (Maranao/Samal/Tao Sug) occasional (usually not seen) 12.40 cm TL male/unsexed  Type specimens collected from Lumbatan and Dansalan, Lake Lanao in 1932 (Ref. 280). Escudero et al. (Ref. 10885) reported that juveniles and mature individuals are found in all months of their sampling; with spawning peak between October and March. Roughly represented 50% of monthly catch of local fishermen from Feb. 1974 to June 1977. Caught by means of libut, operated like a purse seine and fishing is limited to the southern part of the lake. In 1980, still the most abundant species sold daily at Marawi City at relatively cheap price (Ref. 10885). Recorded in a 1982 survey (Ref. 12758). According to a 1990-91 market survey, sirang still ranked third among the lake's finfishes, where fishery is concentrated in the deeper portion, still at the southern part of the lake. An average of 5 to 10 kg of fish (P300-600) are taken in a night's operation (Ref. 13448). A number of samples were caught during the 1994 expedition on the northeastern shore of the lake, from a 10-12 m wide stream with brown-colored waters (Ref. 10888). Not recorded during the 1975, 1976, 1982-83, 1990-91 and 2008 surveys (Ref. 95183). Also Ref. 13446, 70969, 94476.

In the 1990-91 survey, 292 kg were recorded. Caught mainly with fish pots, hook and line, and hand fishing (Ref. 13448). A number of specimens were collected during the 1994 expedition (Ref. 10888). Fry were also introduced in lakes Dapao and Nunungan, Lanao in 1916 (Ref. 2929). This species is popularly called yu-yu in Ifugao. It has become notably abundant after the Japanese occupation for which reason (probably) it has also come to be known as Japanese fish, panispis, or palispis in some places. Yu-yu has since become a major source of fish protein in the region, particularly in many areas beyond the reach of fresh fish from the coasts. This freshwater demersal species prefers muddy substrates, still waters, a subtropical climate (between 5 and 25°C) and seems to be omnivorous. It is no surprise therefore that this species has found an ideal home in the rice terraces of the Cordilleras and has been practically a care-free aquaculture species, well integrated with the organic-farming practices in the region over several decades. Also Ref. 1739, 12157, 119549. Recently catches have declined to very low levels such that even local demands could not be met. The introduction of some freshwater species and some changes in farming practices are believed to have contributed much to the decline and seem to threaten the survival of this fish in the rice fields. The demand for this organically-grown fish has increased not only in the region but also abroad. This fish is now being promoted in the region as a health food, being 70% protein, 20% calcium and practically no cholesterol, according to findings by the Bureau of Foods and Drug (BFAD). In line with the One-Town-One-Product (OTOP) program of the Philippine government, the municipality of Hungduan has adopted yu-yu as its OTOP. The municipal government has alloted PhP 300,000.00 annually for the improvement of yu-yu production for the local market and abroad. The Ifugao provincial government also supports this OTOP and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is involved in the development of aquaculture technology for yu-yu. Traditionally, the rice terraces in Ifugao are open access in terms of fish, shell fish and other non-crop farm products. Now the municipality of Hungduan limits fishing access to individual owners of the rice fields as a way of helping owners manage their own yu-yu resource. Likewise, the municipality has banned the use of vine extracts (rotenone and the like) for catching yu-yu as this method kills young fish as well and could be a health risk to humans. Beyond meeting current market demands, the improvement of yu-yu production in the rice terraces is seen on the long-term as an incentive to farmers to maintain the rice terraces as a cultural heritage and to keep their organic farming practices. It is also hoped that this would help prevent the out migration of more farmers from the region in search of more profitable farming opportunities in the lowlands. (CB). Originally found in Lake Buhi, Camarines Sur, the pygmy goby was exceedingly abundant until 1960 after which it declined and faced extinction in 1978. Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus and O. niloticus), grunt or ayungin (Therapon sp.), snakehead (Ophicephalus striatus), and possibly the goby (Glossogobius sp.) introduced in the lake and feeding on this species contributed to the decline of the population. Collected a specimen for the living fish museum (Ref. 81820). The only viable stock is found in Lake Manapao (Camarines Sur Province), now declared as a sanctuary for this vulnerable species. After 1916, despite orders from Alvin Seale not to distribute the species with the mosquito fish Gambusia affinis, the fish was released in the wild. Found rare in water with salinity as low as 3.1-3.2%, abundant at 3.5% and continues to be so up to 8.7% (its limit of tolerance), entirely disappears at 9.4%. Collected from Obando and Malolos, Bulacan and Malabon. Of no interest for its flesh is bitter. Competes with cultured fish (e.g. Chanos chanos) for algal food ('lab-lab' composed of blue-green algae, diatoms, desmids, filamentous green algae, protozoans and other microscopic animals and ''lumut' or green filamentous algae) that covers the bottom of fishponds (Ref. 12590). It was also found in a creek in front of the Barangay Hall of Estrella Village (9°21'28"N 118°24'58"E), drawing from the stream below Estrella Falls. The stream flows into Malatgao River. Most of the specimens examined were collected from a pool and the lower reaches of a stream below the Estrella Falls (9°21'26"N 118°23'50"E), located where a steep stream from Mt. Victoria (1,726 m) comes out to a large plain in Narra, Sulu Sea-side of the island. It was abundant in the pool below the first major fall with many cyprinids and gobies, but not found in the reaches above it which are occupied by sicydiine gobies including Sicyopus zosterophorus and Lentipes palawanirufus, and eels of the genus Anguilla (species level unidentified). It was also found in a creek in front of the Barangay Hall of Estrella Village (9°21'28"N 118°24'58"E), drawing from the stream below Estrella Falls. The stream flows into Malatgao River. The water at Estrella Falls was cool even during the hottest dry season (water temperature was 26.5°C measured on 13 May, 2016), while water in the Malatgao River was warmer (appeared to be nearly 30°C although not measured). In the surveyed site in the middle reaches of the Malatgao River (9°20'16.7"N118°27'27.0"E), no Rhinogobius were found there (Ref. 125663).

Gobiidae Rhinogobius tandikan Maeda, Kobayshi & Palla, 2021 Fr endemic  Tandikan goby (English)  4.69 cm SL male/unsexed ;4.57 cm SL female  Type locality of Rhinogobius tandikan, northern Puerto Princesa City, Bahile, Cayulo River. This species is found only in the Cayulo River which is a small stream (length approximately 4 km including 1 km of an estuary) flowing into Ulugan Bay on South China Sea-side of the island. The stream system is surrounded by mountains of about 200-400 m above sea level. The Cayulo Falls is composed of a series of small waterfalls, located at the middle reaches of this stream (10°02'12"N 118°45'03"E). The species was found at both the lower and upper reaches of this waterfall, as well as pools in the middle of the falls. It was abundant in this site with many other goby species, cyprinids, and a jungle perch species (Ref. 125663).
