Etymology: Dolopichthys: Greek, 'dolops' or 'dolopos' = ambusher + Greek, 'ichthys' = fish (meaning "a fish that attacks by surprise") (Ref. 86949);  karsteni: Named for Karsten E. Hartel, Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, in recognition of his interest in deep-sea fishes, and for his dedicated service to ichthyologists everywhere as manager of the MCZ fish collections (Ref. 48556).

Radios blandos dorsales (total): 6-7; Radios blandos anales: 5 - 6. Dorsal mid line of escal bulb with single, darkly pigmented anteriorly directed papilla, flanked on each side; slender, compressed, posterior appendage; anterior margin lightly pigmented, length approximately equal to length of escal bulb; darkly pigmented swollen basal portion of posterior appendage (holotype); lower jaw teeth 44-88; teeth on vomer 3-6; dorsal fin rays 6-7; anal fin rays 5-6; pectoral fin rays 15-16 (Ref. 86949).
