Ranges from Rio Grande do Norte south to Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, including Manuel Luiz Reefs and Fernando de Noronha (Ref. 27309, 57756). Museum: Roncadeira, Marataizes, Espirito Santo, MZUSP 51089 (Ref. 27309). One of the most popular fish in the aquarium fish trade and exports to the USA, Europe, and Japan increase the collecting pressure (Ref. 27309). Traded as an aquarium fish at Fortaleza, Ceará where it is often misidentified as Gramma loreto by untrained wholesalers (Ref. 49392).
