Max. size:  6.55 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 3 - 22 m
Distribution:  Southwest Atlantic: endemic to Brazil.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Found over coral and rocky bottoms, on the mainland coast and on coastal as well as oceanic islands. May be solitary or in groups of up to 4 individuals in small caves and under ledges, often swimming upside down, oriented to the ceiling. Feeds by picking at planktonic organisms in the water column; observed occasionally cleaning other fishes, including the pomacentrid Chromis multilineata and the haemulid Haemulon plumieri (Ref. 27309).

Country info:  Ranges from Rio Grande do Norte south to Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, including Manuel Luiz Reefs and Fernando de Noronha (Ref. 27309, 57756). Museum: Roncadeira, Marataizes, Espirito Santo, MZUSP 51089 (Ref. 27309). One of the most popular fish in the aquarium fish trade and exports to the USA, Europe, and Japan increase the collecting pressure (Ref. 27309). Traded as an aquarium fish at Fortaleza, CearĂ¡ where it is often misidentified as Gramma loreto by untrained wholesalers (Ref. 49392).
