Remarks | Mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA gene was partially sequenced to elucidate evolutionary relationships among members of the genus Epinephelus (sensu latu.). Both parsimony criteria and neighbor joining analysis show that there is support for a paraphyletic grouping of the Indo-Pacific species Cephalopholis sonnerati, C. urodeta and C. mineatus with New World species C. fulvus, C. cruentatusiand C. panamensis with the morphologically divergent Paranthias colonus. The Indo-Pacific species are united by a 3-bp indel in the 16S rDNA sequence and are supported bya high bootstrap value (96% parsimony, 97% NJ). Both parsimony criteria and neighboring-joining analysis support a Cephalopholis + Paranthias clade with a high bootstrap value (76% parsimony, 81% NJ) (Ref. 55244). |
