Comments: Known from Three Kings Is. In the north to East Cape, and to as far as Cook Strait. Reported to be common on the offshore islands of North Island; and the most abundant of the larger reef fishes in the Bay of Plenty. Museum: North I., Whangaroa, NMNZ 2638. Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Feeds mainly on small benthic invertebrates like ophiuroids, chitons, amphipods, and small gastropods. Adults feed by rummaging on the bottom while juveniles and sub-adults are facultative cleaner symbionts and pick parasites from the bodies of other fish. They also feed on benthic organisms (Ref. 26966).
