Comments: Known from Three Kings Is. In the north to East Cape, and to as far as Cook Strait. Reported to be common on the offshore islands of North Island; and the most abundant of the larger reef fishes in the Bay of Plenty. Museum: North I., Whangaroa, NMNZ 2638. Feeds mainly on small benthic invertebrates like ophiuroids, chitons, amphipods, and small gastropods. Adults feed by rummaging on the bottom while juveniles and sub-adults are facultative cleaner symbionts and pick parasites from the bodies of other fish. They also feed on benthic organisms (Ref. 26966).
