Etymology: Opistognathus: Greek, opisthe = behind + Greek, gnathos = jaw (Ref. 45335); to the very elongate upper jaw of the type species of the genus, Opistognathus nigromarginatus (Ref. 128653);  aurolineatus: Name from Latin 'aurum' meaning golden and 'lineatus' meaning striped, referring to the three golden orange stripes on the sides of this species..

Spine dorsali (totale): 11; Raggi dorsali molli (totale): 12; Spine anali 2; Raggi anali molli: 11; Vertebre: 26. The species is distinguished by the following characters: a rigid upper jaw lacking flexible lamina posteriorly, extending about 0.9 eye diameters behind posterior margin of orbit; infraorbitals are very broad and robust, third infraorbital without suborbital shelf; D XI,12; A II,11; vertebrae 10+16; scale rows in horizontal series about 68 or 69; total gill rakers on first arch 39; when alive, it has 3 golden stripes on the body (Ref. 128653).
