Issue on validity of subspecies: the subspecies Ptereleotris grammica melanota Randall & Lubock, 1982 is synonymized with the species Ptereleotris grammica Randall & Lubock, 1982 in FB, but is elevated to species rank as Ptereleotris melanota Randall & Lubock, 1982 in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. May 2011: Ref. 86870). The species page will be created in the future. Please send references, or more studies are needed.

背棘 (總數): 7; 背的軟條 (總數): 25-27; 臀棘 1; 臀鰭軟條: 23 - 26; 脊椎骨: 26. Whitish head and body with 3 narrow stripes. Chin with a low, longitudinal, median fold. Scales close-set, embedded or partially embedded, non imbricate (except posteriorly). 1st dorsal fin higher than 2nd, 3rd - 5th spines of adults filamentous; 2nd dorsal with alternating blue and orange-yellow stripes.
微白色的頭部與身體有 3條狹窄的斑紋。 下巴有低的﹐縱向，中動脈摺層。 鱗片靠攏在一起,埋入或者部份地埋入, 非邊緣重疊成瓦狀.(除了後部) 第一背鰭比較高的超過第二, 第三 - 成魚的第 5 棘絲狀的; 第二背鰭有交互的藍色與橘黃色的斑紋。
Occurs on rubble or sandy areas of seaward reefs (Ref. 9710, 48637). Solitary or in pairs (Ref. 90102). Burrows occasionally.
