Etymology: Bujurquina: A name created by Kullander, taken from a native Peruvian word for these cichlids, "bujurqui" or "bufurque"; 1983-1986;  beniensis: Name refers to the type locality Rio Beni, the only drainage in the Bolivian Amazon; an adjective (Ref. 128932).

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 12 - 14; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-11; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 7 - 8; Vertebrae: 24. This species can be distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: longer snout; deeper head, body and caudal peduncle; shorter pectoral fin; more scales in the E1 series; discontinuous longitudinal band, bars 5 and 6 not fused; preopercular spot; no coloration pattern on flank scales (Ref. 128932)
