Known from near Bird Island (=Nihoa), collected in a tow with fishing depths of 572-1463 m (Ref. 58302). (RefType locality, USNM 51590 (holotype of Catulus spongiceps, 51.4 cm TL, female) (Ref. 39431). Also Ref. 244, 11146, 36058.
