Type locality of the holotype of Aplocheilichthys macrophthalmus hannerzi: 'a small brook crossing the road between Port Harcourt and Aba, East Nigeria' (Ref. 113514). Known from southern Nigeria (Ref. 3788, 31256, 57259, 81647), including Ogun River (Ref. 57259), Niger Delta (Ref. 31267, 57259) and Cross River (Ref. 31267, 57259). Also Ref. 27139, 42871.
