Type locality: Wallkill River, New York (Ref. 79012). Recorded above Fall Line in Mississippi Basin and Great Lakes and southern Hudson Bay drainages (Ref. 10294). Absent from Appalachian and Ozark Highlands. Transplanted to Snake River in Idaho and Oregon; presumably introduced into Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Considered excellent bait in the country (Ref. 52559).
