Known from the upper Cumberland River drainage (Big South Fork and above) in Kentucky and Tennessee (Ref. 86798). An endangered species in Tennessee; has been listed as threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Ref. 10294).

Status of threat: threatened; status improved since 1989. Criteria: 1,5 (http://fisc.er.usgs.gov/afs/) (Ref. 81264).
