Recorded from Zhujiang (=Pearl River), Qiantangjiang, Changjiang, Huai River, Yellow River, Yalujiang (Ref. 33784), all drainages of Guangdong Province (Ref. 33303) and Tungting Lake where it is known as "yu-pien-tzu" (Ref. 35840). A popular cultured fish, introduced from its native range to other regions in the country (intensive culture and extensive stocking in all kinds of inland waters) (Ref. 55380).
