Known from Hawai'I Island to Laysan at 210-520 m (Ref. 58302). Also Ref. 559. Museum record USNM 231819 is reidentified as M. mitrigera, which is sympatric with this species. Figure in Chave & Mundy, 1994 (Ref. 7460:372,fig.21) also refers to M. mitrigera (Ref. 84006).
