Introduced in 1954 from Lake Albert to Lake Victoria (Ref. 1739, 4967, 54836, 118630, 118638) and fish ponds in its catchment (Ref. 4967). It has since been spread throughout much of Tanzania as an accidental contaminant of farm strains of Oreochromis niloticus founded from Lake Victoria (Ref. 118638). This includes Pangani River (Ref. 118630), Wami River (Ref. 118630), Ruvu River (Ref. 118630), Ruaha River (Ref. 118630), Lake Eyasi (Ref. 118630), Lake Tanganyika (Ref. 118630), Malagarazi River (Ref. 118630), Lake Rukwa (Ref. 118630) and Lake Malawi (Ref. 118630).
