Introduced in Lake Victoria basin (Ref. 13364, 52331, 56137), Lake Kanyaboli (Ref. 52331), Lake Naivasha (Ref. 2, 87, 164, 364, 1739, 13053, 13364, 42429, 52331, 52871, 56082, 56096) in 1956 (Ref. 87) and some dams in Kenya (Ref. 52331, 56137). According to Welcomme (1988) (Ref. 1739) this species was introduced in 1954 from Lake Albert, Uganda, into Kenyan waters of Lake Victoria; it has also established in Lake Naivasha (Ref. 1739). Reported from the Sondu-Miriu River, up to 9km upstream, and the Nzoia River (Ref. 12523, 55486). Interbred with O. spilurus niger in Lake Naivasha (Ref. 2, 87, 364, 56096), eventually supplanting this species (Ref. 2, 56096).
