Recorded from near Kilwa Island in the Indian ocean. Researchers in the country are still working on it and it will be kept at the National museum (Randy Brummett, pers. Com.). Also with one recorded capture in Zanzibar (Robin Stobbs, rstobbs@telkomsa.net., pers.comm. 12/08). On September 21, 2010 a pregnant female coelacanth was caught North of Karanga Island, outside about 750 m from Nyuli sand bank heading east in Tanzania. The female had about 17-19 pups in het belly and has been preserved. The female coelacanth and its 23 pups, caught on 17 July 2009, had to be discarded for they were rotten due to huge problems in the electricity distribution on Zanzibar (Rik Nulens pers.comm., 12/10).
