Native species ranging from Manitoba to Nova Scotia; introduced into other provinces (Ref. 52559). Occurs in the Great Lakes (Ref. 119192). Mainstay of the gigantic sport fishery and associated tourist industry in eastern Canada. Restricted as a game fish; capture is controlled by season and bag limits (Ref. 1998).
