Type locality, Pará State, municipality of Capanema, Açaiteuazinho River, (tributary of Amazon Estuary), MPEG 15170 (holotype og Gymnotus capanema, 17.9 cm TL, male). Found in drainages of the Amazon Estuary in the state of Pará, Brazil (Rio Açaiteuazinho drainage near the town of Capanema and in the Rio Caeté near the town of Bragança). A single lot found from an unlisted drainage in the municipality of Santa Isabel do Pará indicates that this species is also found some 100 km east of the type locality near Capanema (Ref. 89487).
