Comments: Found in Lake Mainit, Mindanao (Ref. 4867, 13446), Lake Lanao, 1986 survey (Ref. 13446, 70969), Palawan (Ref. 68595), Bagaong River, Sablayan Bay, Mindoro; Malbato R., Port Uson, and Pagauron R., Port Caltom, Busuanga I.; Pancol and creek near Pancol, Malampaya Sound, Iwahig R., and tributaries, Malatgao and Camino rivers, near Puerto Princesa, Malinao R., Mantaquin Bay, Palawan; Zamboanga R.; Isabela R., Basilan I.; Cagayan R., Misamis Oriental, Mindanao. Collected by Herre from Lake Buluan and in a creek at Kidapauan, Cotabato; Balangkott Creek, near Linabo, Malupali R. at Mailag, Tagualmay creek, Bukidnon; Titunod R. near Kolambugan, Lanao; and Busay R. and Balactasan R., Basilan (Ref. 280). Also from Cagayan R. at Cagayan de Misamis; Talacogon, Agusan R.; and Malum R., Tawitawi. Synonyms Barbodes ivis and B. quinquemaculatus, were described from specimens caught from Balabac, Malampaya Sound and Paracan, Palawan: Concepcion and Langbuan, Busuanga, and from Zamboanga, respectively. (Ref. 2929). Museum: Palawan, Malatgau R., CAS-SU 61641. Culion, stream flowing into Halsey Harbor, CAS-SU 27622. Mindoro, CAS-SU 20213 (types of P. hemictenus); Tarogin R., CAS-SU 61643; Hacienda Waterous, Mangarin, CAS-SU 38099. Basilan, Burakan River, CAS-SU 23762. Marata Bogan, Lanao Prov., CAS-SU 38098 (Ref. 2091). Used in the aquarium trade (Ref. 12157). Also Ref. 13492. Status of B. binotatus in Lake Lanao needs further verification. It is uncertain that this species is native or introduced in Lake Lanao. Please refer to Herre 1933 (Ref. 116482) and Kornfield and Carpenter 1984 (Ref. 5950) for explanation of its distribution in the Philippines and status in Lake Lanao.

Lateral line complete; 4 1/2 scales between lateral line and dorsal fin origin; four barbels; last simple dorsal ray bony and serrated behind; one large blotch at anterior base of dorsal fin and a round spot in the middle of caudal peduncle. Juveniles and sometimes adults possess 2-4 midlateral round to elongate spots (Ref. 7050). Color in life varies from silvery gray to greenish gray; darker dorsally; paler or nearly white on throat and belly; a bar behind operculum on shoulder; body markings (spots or band) may be absent on large specimens, except spot on caudal base. 8-9 scales from nape to dorsal; 2.5 (rarely 3) scales between ventral and lateral line. 4th dorsal spine serrate. Round, broad-tipped snout equal or a seventh longer than eye (Ref. 2929).

Occurs from sea level to at least 2000 m above sea level and is commonly found below waterfalls in isolated mountain streams and on small islands inhabited by few other freshwater fishes (Ref. 2091). Inhabits medium to large rivers, stagnant water bodies including sluggish flowing canals and brooks of the middle Mekong (Ref. 12975). Found in middle to bottom depths in fairly shallow waters where it feeds on zooplankton, insect larvae and some vascular plants. Probably does not migrate (Ref. 12693).
