Etymology: Tylochromis: Greek, tylos = callus + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); polylepis: Named by Boulenger (1900) presumably in reference to the species' numerous small scales and the resultant high lateral line formula (Ref. 52346). Polys= Greek for many, lepis= Latin for scale (Ref. 52307).

पृष्ठीय रीढ़ (सम्पूर्ण): 14 - 16; पृष्ठीय सौफट रेज़ (सम्पूर्ण): 13-15; गुदा कांटा 3; ऐनल सौफट रेज़: 7 - 9; जानवरों की रीड़ का जोड़: 30. Diagnosis: high lateral line count (54-59 scales)(Ref. 52346). Scales small (Ref. 53244).

Swamp-dweller (Ref. 6770). Juveniles are coastal and gregarious while adults wander over the sandy bottoms by themselves (Ref. 6770), in shallow inshore areas of the lake, in lagoons and river mouths (Ref. 4967). Feeds mainly on crustaceans and insects, along with some plants (Ref. 52307), but also a mollusc eater (Ref. 6316, 10616). Maternal mouthbrooder (Ref. 1872, 52307) that does not pair bond (Ref. 52307). Females have been observed with about 100 eggs of a diameter of 6 mm (Ref. 52307).
