Etymology: Wuhanlinigobius: Named for Chinese ichthyologist, Prof. Wu, Han-lin, for recognizing his great contribution for the ichthyological research in China especially for gobioid fishes.;  malayensis: Named for the country of its type locality, brackishwater habitat of Malay Peninsula region..

Description synthétique Morphologie | Morphométrie

Épines dorsales (Total): 7; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total): 7-8; Épines anales 1; Rayons mous anaux: 8 - 9. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of unique characters: D VI, D2 I,7-8 (modally 8); A I,8-9 (modally 8), P 18-19 (modally 18); first dorsal fin never filamentous; lateral body with small ctenoid scales, longitudinal scale rows 56-59 (modally 57), predorsal scales 23-29 (modally 26); caudal fin creamy yellow or pale yellow, with broad black submarginal edge in male; in male, upper caudal fin base with a large rounded black spot (Ref. 94983).
