Etymology: Periophthalmus: Greek, peri = around + Greek, ophthalmos = eye (Ref. 45335);  walailakae: Named in commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the foundation of Walailak University (Ref. 49729).

Description synthétique Morphologie | Morphométrie

Épines dorsales (Total): 9 - 10; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total): 10; Épines anales 1; Rayons mous anaux: 8 - 10. Teeth in both jaws in a single row; snout, isthmus and interorbital region with no scales; frenum strongly prominent; pelvic fins completely joined by membrane for entire length to form a disk; dorsal fins well separated; first dorsal brownish red with a white margin, its margin rounded; second dorsal fin with a black stripe in middle of fin; dark brown and pale yellow spots on head and trunk (Ref. 49729). Caudal fin asymmetrically rounded (Ref. 49729).

Facultative air-breathing (Ref. 126274); Found in mangrove forests (Ref. 49729). Builds burrows 9-13 cm wide and 100-120 cm deep (Ref. 49729). Nocturnal, leaving the burrow to feed in the evening and returning in the morning (Ref. 49729).
