Etymology: Careproctus: Greek, kara = face + Greek, proktos = anus (Ref. 45335);  atakamensis: Named after the Atakama Trench (Ref. 34289).

Short description Morfología | Morfometría

Espinas dorsales (total): 0; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 54; Espinas anales 0; Radios blandos anales: 48. Pleural ribs absent. Hypural plate single, no slit. Gill slit small but reaching ventrally past 4th pectoral ray. Pectoral fin not overlapping the anal fin origin; 5 notched rays, spaced, short to rudimentary (11+5+6). Head 19.8%, preanal 31.4%, disk 6.0%. Peritoneum black (Ref. 34289).
