描述: (以 22件标本为依据): 成鱼的高度: 15.0-25.0 公分。 环: 11+40.(39-41) 吻的长度: 2.1(2.0-2.3) 分之一头长。 背鳍鳍条: 18(17-19)个覆盖 2+1个环。 胸鳍鳍条: 18.(17-19) 冠: 高度地, 在冠之前有五个矮棘 , 与高的碟。
棘: 低的而且圆的,些微地更在较年青的标本中发展了, 但是仍然顶端钝
其他的显着特性: 长的, 些微地向后指出, 圆的颊棘; 深的头部; 狭窄的身体; 厚的体环; 突出又圆形的眼棘; 厚的吻。
彩色斑纹: 灰白的, 时常在垂直的线中有极小的白色斑点连续, 但是不一样地均匀的颜色。
幼鱼 H. kelloggi 神情非常类似 H. spinosissimus 。
