Taggstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt): 10 - 12; Mjukstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt): 24-48; Taggstrålar i analfenan 2; Mjukstrålar i analfenan: 7 - 9; Ryggkotor: 24 - 26. Snout blunt. Interorbital space wide (8.0-9.7% SL). Anal soft rays usually eight. High gill raker count (6-7 + 1 + 10-14). Scales on throat ctenoid.

The most common species of Johnius (Johnius) in Chinese waters (Ref. 10101). Sandy-muddy bottoms and muddy bottoms from 25-110 m depth (Ref. 43239).
