Rückenflossenstacheln (insgesamt): 4; Rückenflossenweichstrahlen (insgesamt): 8; Afterflossenstacheln 0; Afterflossenweichstrahlen: 6 - 8. Rare individuals have a bright red ground color (Ref. 1602). Preopercular spine 0[2-5/0]1 (Ref. 37816).

Inhabits shallow protected lagoons and inshore reefs (Ref. 1602, 48636). Found on silty bottoms with coral and rubble (Ref. 9710). Usually in small groups spread over small area (Ref. 48636).
