Pelvic fins of females with 6 soft rays, absent in males (Ref. 6600). No true gill rakers (Ref. 27363). Dark brown or pale in male and black or dark brownish black in female (Ref. 37473).

Mesopelagic in depths exceeding 500 m (Ref. 7249) and bathypelagic (Ref. 58302). Females undergo diel vertical migrations (Ref. 7249).
