Dorsal soft rays (total): 82 - 94; Anal soft rays: 68 - 80. This species is distinguished by the following characters: D 82-94; much reduced squamation on preopercle and opercle and occiput almost naked; scale rows on trunk above beginning of anal fin 18-20; black eye comparatively small (10-13.5% HL), none or minute lens <10%; otolith roundish, massive, OL:OH = 1.2-1.55, the inner face flat while outer one strongly convex (Ref. 126178).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Rare species (Ref. 34024). Reproductive strategy possibly similar to other members of this family featuring oviparity, with oval pelagic eggs floating in a gelatinous mass (Ref. 205).

Estimates based on models

Preferred temperature (Ref. 123201): 0.7 - 2.3, mean 2.1 °C (based on 1504 cells).
Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.7500   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.00110 (0.00041 - 0.00296), b=3.08 (2.85 - 3.31), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this (Sub)family-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  3.5   ±0.6 se; based on size and trophs of closest relatives
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  High, minimum population doubling time less than 15 months (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (19 of 100).
