Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Prefers small and shallow streams or sunny swamps. A quite species which is not so keen on jumping (Ref. 35237). In its natural environment of shallow marshes and streams with little current, it can be sympatric with R. xiphidius, R. igneus, R. lungi and R. cladophorus. Not a seasonal killifish. Is easy to maintain in the aquarium (Ref. 27139). Sexual differentiation begins during the first week. Reproduction may start at around 10 months. Females spawn approximately 20 eggs measuring 1.5 mm diameter. Hatching occurs after 4 weeks of incubation at 22°C, thus releasing alevins measuring 3 mm long. This species is well known by the aquarists who breed them easily (Ref. 35237).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.00661 (0.00311 - 0.01404), b=3.09 (2.91 - 3.27), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this (Sub)family-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  3.3   ±0.45 se; based on food items.
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  High, minimum population doubling time less than 15 months (tm=0.83).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (10 of 100).
