Distinguished from its congeners by its unique cheeks covered by several rows of scales. Differs further from other species of the genus by the combination of the following characters: first dorsal fin with 7-10 spines; second dorsal fin with 1-2 simple and 9-11½ branched rays; and 70-85 + 4-7 scales along the lateral line (Ref. 59043).
Adults occur in main course of small to large rives and in stretches with strong current. Found on stone bottom. Active at night, feeding on aquatic invertebrates. Spawning occurs on gravel bottom in March-May (Ref. 59043).
