Distinguished from its congeners in Balkan Peninsula by the following combination of characters: 38-43 + 2-3 scales on lateral line; anal fin usually with 11½ branched rays; pectoral fin with 14-18 rays; 17-24 gill rakers; dorsal profile of head conspicuously concave, tip of snout about level of middle eye; articulation of lower jaw below or behind anterior margin of eye; eye close to dorsal head profile when viewed laterally; head length 24-35% SL; and body depth 20-30% SL (Ref. 59043).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Occurs in lakes and lowland water courses with little current. Feeds on plants (Ref. 26100). Deposits among vegetation adhesive, spherical and yellow eggs which hatch in 4 days at 25° C (Ref. 59043). Threatened due to water abstraction, pollution and habitat destruction (Ref. 26100).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5010   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.01000 (0.00434 - 0.02305), b=3.02 (2.81 - 3.23), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this (Sub)family-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  2.0   ±0.00 se; based on food items.
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  Low, minimum population doubling time 4.5 - 14 years (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low to moderate vulnerability (30 of 100).
Price category (Ref. 80766):   Unknown.
