Dorsal soft rays (total): 91 - 93. Nostril slit-like. Tongue slender with many irregular villiform tooth patches. First spine of dorsal fin elongate. First anal fin ray scale-like, other embedded; pelvic fins reduced to scale-like spines. Pectoral fins triangular in shape. Body is silvery white, all fins pale brown, opercle lining blackish.
Abundant in sea mountain areas, sometimes near the shore. Feeds on rather large fishes (species of Priacanthus, Decapterus, Emmelichthys, etc.) in Kyushu Palau-Ridge. Sometimes marketed fresh in Okinawa, Japan when caught.
