Africa: Senegal, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Benin, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan (White Nile) (Ref. 47774). In the Congo basin known from the lower Congo, Stanley Pool (Ref. 47774), the middle Congo River (Ref. 109017) and the Ubangi (Ref. 47774).

Dorsal soft rays (total): 8 - 9. Has 12-14 bold oblique dark stripes on the flanks which may continue onto the caudal fin. The caudal fin may either be pointed or broadly rounded with a small point (Ref. 28714).
Occurs in swampy areas, small brooks and small streams and other bodies of quiet water in the savannah (Ref. 47774). 6 cm max TL (Ref. 3788). Browses on algae and higher plant material, terrestrial and aquatic insects, notably culicid larvae and pupae and small beetles. Males are smaller than females (Ref. 28714). Not a seasonal killifish. Is very difficult to maintain in aquarium (Ref. 27139).
