Distribution: Southern Hemisphere. Dorsal fins 2; first dorsal with a single ray. Single anal fin. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are all joined; the elongated body scales are arranged at oblique angles to each other (Ref. 1371). Chin with barbel. No teeth on head of vomer. Pyloric caeca absent. This family probably includes about 6 species of 4 have been described to-date (Ref. 1371).

Latin, muraena = morey eel + Greek, lepis = scale ( Ref. 45335).
