Distribution: northern North America. Scales ctenoid and cycloid. Naked head. Dorsal fin spines 1 or 2; soft rays 9-12. Anal fin spines 1 or 2; soft rays 6 or 7. Pelvic fin insertion subthoracic; pelvic rays 8. Attains a maximum length of 20 cm.
