Teleostei (teleosts) > Tetraodontiformes
(Puffers and filefishes) > Tetraodontidae
(Puffers) > Canthigasterinae
Etymology: Canthigaster: Greek, kanthos = the outer or inner corner of the eye, where the lids meet, 1646 + Greek, gaster = stomach (Ref. 45335); jamestyleri: Named for James C. Tyler, for his help and advice to the authors, as well as for his many contributions to the study of the systematics of plectognath fishes (Ref. 43205).
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Marine; reef-associated; depth range 90 - 100 m (Ref. 43205). Subtropical
Western Atlantic: off the southeast coast of the USA and the Gulf of Mexico.
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 8.5 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 43205)
Morphology | Morphometrics
soft rays: 9. Absence of dark dorsal and ventral margins on the caudal fin and the presence of a small irregular dark spot on the dorsal fin base; presence of bars on the caudal fin; presence of diagonally oriented lines on the snout, and presence of two darker longitudinal stripes on the sides of its body (Ref. 43205).
Occurs in deep reefs, most probably over hard bottom (Ref. 43205). Maximum depth from Ref. 58018.
