Etymology: Gymnocypris: Greek, gymnos = naked + Greek, Kypris, other name for Aphrodite, proceeding from Cyprus (Kypris), Greek, kyprinos = carp (Ref. 45335).
This species is synonym of Gymnocypris eckloni Herzenstein, 1891 in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. May 2011: Ref. 86870).
