Two opercular spines and several vertical bars on body ending as ocelli or dark blotches on dorsal and anal fin. Different from N. fasciatus by having 11-13 long rakers against 8-10, and anterior ocellus in front of line versus posterior to line in N. fasciatus.
Rare species (Ref. 34024). Reproductive strategy possibly similar to other members of this family featuring oviparity, with oval pelagic eggs floating in a gelatinous mass (Ref. 205).
