Africa: Bandama, Comoé and Bia river drainages in central, southern and eastern Côte d'Ivoire. The Bia, Tano, Ankobra and Oda river drainages in southwestern Ghana.

Occurs in swamps, pools, brooks and small streams in the coastal rainforest and forested savanna (Ref. 3788). Bottom spawner, 2 months incubation. Is easy to maintain in the aquarium (Ref. 27139).
