Africa: Endemic to Lake Malawi. Occurs along the entire coast between Ngara and Chizi Point.

Some individuals of a population are very shy and hide permanently in caves whereas others form large schools over sand. Feeds on sand-dwelling invertebrates (Ref. 5595).
