Vertebrae: 35 - 39. This subspecies possess the following characters: D IX-XI (mode 9-10); 18-22 (mode 19) scales below lateral line; relatively long base of dorsal fin (43.1-51.7, mean 48.0% SL); anterior suborbital area with a black oblique band; black spot or black crescentic marking on posteroventral corner of the preopercle; no black spot, (rarely with a small dark spot) on the anterior part of preopercle; spinous portion of dorsal fin mostly with black distal margin; without black line along anal-fin base; pelvic fin with a black line along posterior margin of pelvic-fin spine (rarely a black line with a black spot on uppermost end, or two black lines), two white lines on first ray, and membrane between fourth and fifth rays (Ref. 76763)..
Adults occur in sandy bottoms and rocky areas (Ref. 76763); also in areas with Sargassum (Ref. 559). Viviparous, female carries the developing young (Ref. 205).
