Definition of Term

reef
(English) A largely consolidated wave resistant feature; the upper surface is within 0-20 m of the ocean surface; in the tropics, the upper portion is typically composed mainly of living and non-living remains of coral and coralline algae; rock lying at or near the surface and which may pose a danger to navigation. (French) Caractéristique largement onde résistante consolidée ; la surface supérieure est entre 0-20 m de la surface d'océan ; dans les tropiques, la partie supérieure est typiquement composée principalement de vestiges vivantes et non-vivantes de corail et d'algue coralline ; roc qui s'allonge à ou s'approche la surface et lequel peut poser un danger à navigation. (Portuguese) Estrutura consolidade resistente às ondas; a sua parte superior está entre 0 e 20 m de profundidade; nos trópicos a sua parte superior é tipicamente constituída por coral e algas coralinas; estrutura rochosa perto ou à superfície do mar que constitui um perigo à navegação.
