Definition of Term

principle of binominal nomenclature
(English) According to the Code, the principle that the scientific name of a species, and not of a taxon at any other rank, is a combination of two names, the first being the generic name and the second the specific name. The principle applies to the names of species, and the fact that family-group and genus-group names are uninominal and subspecies names trinominal is not inconsistent with the principle. Names interpolated into a binomen are also not inconsistent with the principle. (See also: Code, nomenclature, binominal name)
(See also: Code, nomenclature, binominal name)
(See also: Code, nomenclature, binominal name)
