Known from the upper Tennessee River drainage (from lower Clinch River system in Tennessee, and Holston River system in Virginia to near Georgia border) in Virginia and Tennessee (Ref. 86798). Rare and localized in distribution (Ref. 86798). Listed as species of special concern by the Tennessee Heritage Program and deemed in need of management by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (Ref. 10294). Also Ref. 5723.

Status of threat: vulnerable; status same as 1989. Criteria: 1,5 (http://fisc.er.usgs.gov/afs/) (Ref. 81264).
