Comments |
Found only in the Zacapu Lake and its outlet in Michoacan. The introduction of the exotic carp species Cyprinus carpioand Ctenopharyngodon idella and their parasite Bothriocephalus acheilognathi Yamaguti, 1934 seems to pose a negative impact on this species. Water mass in the lake has decreased due to reduction of water inflow to the springs that feeds the lake and drying of the original marshy area for agricultural purposes. This water mass reduction had detrimental impacts on the Zacapu Lake population of Zoogoneticus quitzeoensis (Bean, 1897), severely comprising genetic diversity and increasing the extinction risk of its fish populations. This fish species should be considered in danger of extinction under the Mexican environmental law and based on the criteria of Risk Evaluation Method (Método de Evalucaión de Riesgo-MER). Also it is proposed that this should be classified as critically endangered based on IUCN criteria (Ref. 84762). |
