Type locality, upper río Tebicuary-mi, tributary to río Tebicuary (drainage of the lower río Paraguay), at ruta No. 7 approx. 25 km east of Cnel. Oviedo in the province of Caaguazú, MTD F 30367 (holotype of Gymnogeophagus caaguazuensis, 8.48 cm SL, male) (Ref. 78439).
